CAS Training Scheme

The scheme applies to all operatives who are at any time required to erect, substantially alter, or dismantle a CAS structure.

The CAS Training Scheme includes installation and use of the CAS product to the following standards:

• Product Familiarisation
• Basic Erector
• Advanced Erector/Supervisor.

Knowledge, Experience & Competencies

Due to the design and the environment the CAS system is used in, operatives involved in the installation and subsequent dismantle of the CAS system must have certain competencies and skills in a construction-based discipline working at height, such as Tower Crane, Construction Hoist Installation Operative or as a Scaffolder. Suitability for this training is assessed on a case-by-case basis, where an initial level of training, competence, and relevant experience in working at height must be present to ensure understanding of safe working practices and of the selection, use and pre-use inspection of personal fall protection equipment.

This initial level of competence also ensures that work at height is properly planned, including:

  • planning for emergencies and rescue
  • ensuring that work is appropriately supervised and carried out in a manner which is, so far as is reasonably practicable, safe
  • planning includes the selection of suitable work equipment.

Working at Height Experience: A Pre-Requisite

All those trained in the CAS system will already have competence and training in working at height. Section 1 of the CAS Operations and Maintenance Manual gives an overview of working at height specifically on the CAS system. Any operative that has not attained the necessary levels of training, assessment and experience with the CAS system must not be employed on such work unless they:

  • Are under adequate supervision
  • Work with an operative who has the required training and experience.

Product Familiarisation

This initial part of the training provides operatives with an overview of what the CAS system is, identifies each of the component parts and how they are put together. The items covered are:

  • CAS Tower Design
  • Component list
  • Storage, Handling & Transportation
  • Pre-assembly Component Inspection
  • Setting Out
  • Manual Assembly
  • Module Assembly
  • Loading Limits
  • Maintenance & Inspection
  • Dismantling

Working from CAS design layout drawings, operatives are talked through the scheme and then invited to assemble certain key components such as:

  • Hoist Tie Floor
  • Intermediate Restraint Floor
  • Plan brace Floor

Basic Erector

Once Product Familiarisation is successfully completed, operatives are then able to progress to installation on site, under supervision. During time on site, operatives are actively involved in installation of the structure to the specific CAS design. After a period of time, following the first stage installation height and then one installation climb to the next level, the operative is then assessed to ensure that all of the training objectives have been met, and the operative has the necessary knowledge and skills to carry out installation correctly, efficiently and safely.

There is a set rubric of standards, each with skills and knowledge criteria that the operative must meet during this stage.

Advanced Erector/Supervisor

Operatives who have successfully completed the Basic Erector assessment can then progress to the Advanced Erector/Supervisor course.

Successful completion of this stage also requires meeting the criteria of a set of knowledge standards and corresponding skills including:

  • Recognise the need to modify design changes to a CAS structure due to site conditions or client wishes
  • Understand the relationships and effects between the CAS system and the loads imposed upon it and how they interact with the main building
  • Understand the need to coordinate with other trades on site, including hoist installation teams
  • Knowing how long tasks will take to complete - effective programme planning and communication of tasks
  • Effective supervision - motivating team members, assessing strengths and weaknesses of individuals within the installation team, offering feedback and coaching.
