The scheme applies to all operatives who are at any time required to erect, substantially alter, or dismantle a CAS structure.
The CAS Training Scheme includes installation and use of the CAS product to the following standards:
• Product Familiarisation
• Basic Erector
• Advanced Erector/Supervisor.
Due to the design and the environment the CAS system is used in, operatives involved in the installation and subsequent dismantle of the CAS system must have certain competencies and skills in a construction-based discipline working at height, such as Tower Crane, Construction Hoist Installation Operative or as a Scaffolder. Suitability for this training is assessed on a case-by-case basis, where an initial level of training, competence, and relevant experience in working at height must be present to ensure understanding of safe working practices and of the selection, use and pre-use inspection of personal fall protection equipment.
This initial level of competence also ensures that work at height is properly planned, including:
All those trained in the CAS system will already have competence and training in working at height. Section 1 of the CAS Operations and Maintenance Manual gives an overview of working at height specifically on the CAS system. Any operative that has not attained the necessary levels of training, assessment and experience with the CAS system must not be employed on such work unless they:
This initial part of the training provides operatives with an overview of what the CAS system is, identifies each of the component parts and how they are put together. The items covered are:
Working from CAS design layout drawings, operatives are talked through the scheme and then invited to assemble certain key components such as:
Once Product Familiarisation is successfully completed, operatives are then able to progress to installation on site, under supervision. During time on site, operatives are actively involved in installation of the structure to the specific CAS design. After a period of time, following the first stage installation height and then one installation climb to the next level, the operative is then assessed to ensure that all of the training objectives have been met, and the operative has the necessary knowledge and skills to carry out installation correctly, efficiently and safely.
There is a set rubric of standards, each with skills and knowledge criteria that the operative must meet during this stage.
Operatives who have successfully completed the Basic Erector assessment can then progress to the Advanced Erector/Supervisor course.
Successful completion of this stage also requires meeting the criteria of a set of knowledge standards and corresponding skills including:
